I got a Noctua, don't have the model number handy, but any silent 80mm fan will do, unless its a PWM fan - a fan with variable speed controlled on the mobo. Those are 4pins. You need (most probably) a sleeve fan or hydro-bearing fan, with 3 pins on its connector.

I'm lost here. there is a dozen choices on NewEGG. Is it black or brown -- any idea of RPMs etc -- some descriptor. How much was it?, fans range from 8-40 dollars

Noctua NF-R8 redux 1800 80mm
Average 1800rpm
17.1 dB/A
31.3 CFM (53.3 cubic meters per hour)

But whatever fan you get that has noise level below 25dB/A should be great. In the end, what you want is to lower noise level.
I'm also looking to install sliced rubber grommets under the disks, to prevent them from making the chassis rattle while spinning.

The fan I just described to you is too THICK to be used. The black grill at the back and the screws use won't work with such a fan. I actually broke my plastic case trying to fit the fan in. Not sure I'll be able to get a replacement fan that fits. AND I just spent 19$ on the fan, and cut its wires to connect it (i can confirm it works and is a lot less noisy), so how I will get the fan set inside and closed up is beyond me.

The problem is the standard fan is 25mm thick
Media sonics is 20mm. Another non standard piece
I guess you would need longer screws I'll get back to you

Last night I was reading the Newegg reviews. Some one mentioned that the standard fan is 25mm thick and that Mediasonic uses a 20mm fan. (which is non standard)
I was thinking longer screws and one of those wire frame guards you put over the blades, What part got broken - the plastic grill or the somthing on rhe case.
But your saying the fan is to wide and wont fit in the hole?

No-- the fan is 80mm and fits perfectly. The thickness of the fan is too much to close up the grill on top. I need a 20mm x 80mm x 80mm SILENT fan.

What got broken is the screw hole in the removable back of the unit's case. I'm currently trying to buy one off Mediasonic.

Longer screws wont help, unless you leave the back fan grill off completely. Changes the esthetic of the case, but nothing more.

I contacted Mediasonic and they gracefully replaced my back cover for free. Most gracious of them. I don't think they'll do that for everyone, but my situation was particular.
I'm still looking for the 20x80x80 silent fan to put in. Also must make sure the connector is a 2-pin micro-connector. Not very easy to find!
I still have the severed connector from the original boxed fan, Should be able to hotwire something!
