eSATA controller card recommendations

Postby Buckethead » March 6th, 2016, 1:41 am

Looking for SATA controller card suggestions to use with an H8R2-SU3S2 8-bay enclosure. The Mediasonic HP1-SS3 card suggested on the product page is not readily available, and the Silicon Image 3132/3124 chipsets suggested on the forum page are old SATA 2 cards. Trying to maximize performance so I would use USB 3 before SATA 2.

It seems most SATA cards don't indicate their max drive number so I'd like to know what others are successfully using.

Thanks.

the 3.5" hard drives still can not reach USB 5.0 Gbps nor eSata 6Gbps speed yet
so using SIL3132 sata card we recommended still ok
SATA II is 3Gbps
the hard drives can't reach that speed yet
Unless you are using SSD

I have a spare ASM1061 PCI-E esata controller card. Will it work with all 8 drives? I'm thinking I'll
try to set up FreeNAS with it.

I'm having a hard time finding Silicon Image 3132/3124 based eSATA cards, and the card that I currently have (Mediasonic HP1-SS3) has been causing blue screens in Windows 10. Is there a different eSATA controller that works well?
