enclosure disconnects and needs power cycle

Postby adlermike » December 27th, 2014, 9:36 am

Hello I have one of this enclosures and I am experiencing a disconnect every few days.

I suspect it's a failing drive.

Do you know any good tools that can help me narrow it down to which drive?
All 8 bays are populated.

I use two of these under Linux - and yes, a failing drive will cause disconnects. Under ubuntu, i use something called 'smartctl', which I believe is part of the 'smartmontools' package. A graphical version also exists called "gsmartcontrol". It appears there is a windows version as well.

Note to linux users, and maybe Windows users (not sure): If you use the smartctl command to query drives in these enclosures, use the '-d sat' option as the disk type. And of course (linux only), it's considered a better practice to reference drives connected via usb via /dev/disk/by-id rather than /dev/sdX.
