All drives disconnect when removing one drive

Postby darkice83 » July 14th, 2015, 12:44 pm

Model of the Enclosure: Probox 8 bay - Non Raid
Date and place of Purchase: - would have been canadacomputer or ncix, about a year ago
Operating System used: Windows 2012 Essentials
Model / Brand and how many Hard Drives used: 8 500gb drives from different ventors, i think WDGreens and seagates
If Raid enclosure, what Raid mode being used:N/A
What is the issue you are having: When one drive is removed, all other drives get momentarily disconnected
If USB 3.0: Is it onboard or Add on PCIe card: Add on PCIe card, server has a Q6700 processor with 8gb of ram
Is your system overclocked?? No

is this a limitation of using USB3.0 with so many drives that all drives get disconnected (i.e. windows loses them for about a minute) when one drive is removed from the stack?
I can get more details this evening if needed

Of course this will happen!

USB is not hotswap so when you remove a drive from the enclosure all drives will disconnect and then reconnect automatically after a few seconds. If you want to avoid this you must use ESATa that supports hotswap and make sure the ESATA card has port multiplier for at lease 8 drives as many eSATA cards only support 5 drives.

I wished the usb part would have been better described somewhere. Either way, ESata card is being orderd
Syba (Best Connectivity) 2 ports e-SATA (External) SATA II PCI-Express Controller Card (SD-SA2PEX-2E)
seems like it's one of the cards you recommend
