Solved Flaky Drive Recognition

Postby Redux » November 9th, 2019, 4:30 am

I have had problems with two Proboxes on a Mac mini for years. In order for drives to be recognized I had to do a very tricky timing on boot up. Power up the computer, wait exactly 2 seconds, and then power on the drive case. In no other way would the drives be recognized. Once they were recognized they worked fine until the next shutdown, when I had to repeat the trick, which meant I couldn't restart the computer remotely so it was a pain. One of the boxes had this behavior from the beginning, the second worked fine initially but developed the same problem after a few months of use.

I just recently replaced the original USB3 cables that came with the box with new UB3 cables and the boxes both now work fine. I can boot up the computer then turn on the box at any time, or turn on the box first and then boot, or both the same time; doesn't matter. Just like it's supposed to!

With a Mac mini
try using Powered USB hub. So connect enclosure to powered USB Hub
