How to check S.M.A.R.T. status of HDDs

Postby DobZombie » December 22nd, 2014, 12:27 pm

Hi!

Here's my setup...
8x 3TB HDDs
RAID 50
1x 16TB ARRAY
USB3 connection

I've developed an issue with one of my drives.
I copied 1TB of data to the drives, but when I was copying the data back I found a problem.
Keep in mind that the RAID ERROR light never came on.

When I started to copy the problem file across, the whole array would unmount and remount itself.
It was like the USB3 connection was pulled out and then reconnected.

I then took out the USB and plugged it into a USB2.0 connection.
Once again I tried to copy the problem file and the copying speed went from 2MB/sec to a crawl, but would stay connected and not crash/unmount.

I encountered this with a few files and one of 2 things would happen...
1) The copying of the file would fail, or
2) The file copied across, slowly, but EVENTUALLY.

I noticed that when I was having copying issues that the 3rd LED on the top row of lights would blink RED instead of BLUE.
I identified the problem drive and removed it.

The RAID ERROR light came on, but the array now works as normal.
I've been using the array one drive short while I wait for a new 3TB drive to arrive.

What I'd like to find out is if there is a program out there that can read the S.M.A.R.T. status of the drives while still in the array?
Tell me if the HDD is near death, or even if there are any bad sectors on the drive.

If that's not possible, can I pull each drive out individually and put it into a HDD dock and check them that way?
Would that ruin the array at all?

I have another raid setup that requires a RocketRaid card with 2x eSATA connections.
It's slow as shit (10MB/s MAX), has a not so great web interface, but it does have a few advanced features.
It does though tell me if there are any drive errors, and keeps a log of it. Tells me each HDDs health.
I can see if the array is rebuilding, and what percentage it is through.

My mediasonic 8-bay drive is more user friendly. it's plug and play, and copies SOOOO much faster :)
but it doesn't tell me if there any drive issues. :(
I downloaded the JMicron raid manager, but it tell me nothing.

I really wanted to ask these questions a month ago, but the forums were down. Bad timing on my part I suppose lol

Thanks!

Hard Disk Sentinel will display the hard drive smart status.

It was the recommended software before this forum got wiped clean.

No good :(

It's having trouple determining the health status of the RAID 50 array. It's the only array it can't read :(

Ensure the box is unchecked in Configuration -> Disk Control ->Disable detection of USB and SCSI devices..

If the box is checked uncheck it, then restart the software. If not reboot.

Still got nothing on screen :(

With the box unticked, and multiple reboots. Nothing.

I've got a raid 50. but it shows up as two RAID 5. If I reboot the mediasonic, it shows up as a RAID 50.

It's all a bit wierd o.0

Is there a special version of HDD sentinal I'm meant to be using?

Hard disk sentinel and most SMART info software can't read smart on Raid 50 drives
you will have to turn off the enclosure
and put one drive at a time into a single bay enclosure and check the Smart info drive by drive (make sure not to initialize, if asked to by Windows)
note: don't mess up the drive order.
