HW 150 PVR - Allow Recording at Lower Picture Quality

Postby laridae » December 24th, 2014, 10:20 am

The files created by an HD recording are huge - around 7 or 8 GB per hour which can quickly fill up your EHD. We don't always need that high quality and sometimes would be willing to trade off lower picture quality for smaller files (eg. for sharing with others, saving in a more compact format, etc) So, I propose that when making a recording or setting the timer we also have the option to specify what picture quality we want.

Options could include as a minimum;
High - 100% of broadcast picture quality and file size (this would continue to be the default)
Medium - 50% file size, say
Low - 20% file size, say - or some low value that still allows a watchable picture.
Additional levels in between could also be offered for a total of 10 levels, say. This is analogous to the choices we have when saving a .jpg file in a photo editing program like Photoshop.

Implementing this would obviously require some processing power in the box to downsize the picture stream in real time while saving it to disk. I leave it to the Company to determine if this is feasible and if the added benefit is worth the cost.

Edit: re 4K - Depending on the Company's roadmap for developing new features and products, this could be implemented in conjunction with an upgrade to 4K recording, if and when that comes about.
