HW180STB Hard Drive Not Working

Post by Moike »

I recently purchased a "2018 version" HW180STB for recording over-the-air broadcasts.

I bought a 2TB hard drive to use with it, selecting a Western Digital 2TB Elements Portable External Hard Drive - USB 3.0 - model WDBU6Y0020BBK-WESN. The Homeworx unit does not recognize it. It is formatted with NTFS.

This is not a powered hard drive (pulls power from the USB cable), but I thought that this should work for the HW180STB 2018 version. I am now wondering whether I have:

A) A defective unit?
B) An incompatible hard drive?
C) A non "2018 version" of the HW180STB.

My unit indicates that it is:

Model HW180STB
SW Version: Aug 10 2017 16:55:37 V13.0
HW Version: MLG-M7-168A-VER 1.2

Can anyone confirm whether this is the 2018 hardware version I ordered? Are there any software updates I should get? Any other suggestions?

At this point the HW180STB is working as a tuner, but I have a built-in tuner on my TV, so it isn't working for the only thing I needed, recording shows. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I believe that is too large of a hard drive to work with these boxes. Only 800mA is available from the USB port. In addition - the larger the drive, the longer the response time even if you get it powered. I would never go above 1 TB for a drive. In fact, I use a 2.5" 320GB drive so that I don't overload the power limits plus get a response time that approaches flash drive performance.

Did you attempt format it within the USB menu? One work-around may be to format the drive as NTFS in Windows and label the drive ' 123456789 '. [no quotes] (This works for flash drives for me.) You may also try splitting the drive in smaller partitions and naming one partition ' 123456789 ' and see if it reads it. Definitely use a se a power supply, unless the drive is designed to run off of USB power.
